Four Stories of Healing 🌿

As our Invest in Healing campaign continues, we want to share a few real-life examples of how your financial support made a transformational impact this year. Your giving helps to fund our scholarship program, which allows Harbor to care for people facing all sorts of profound and often debilitating hardships. Rather than their circumstances dictating what kind of care they are able to access for themselves, Harbor stands ready to help in whatever way needed, regardless of circumstances, thanks to the scholarship program. So here are a few stories of healing made possible through your support this year.

“Thanks to the Harbor scholarship program, a client who has experienced homelessness and drug addiction has been able to receive services, working through childhood trauma and exploring his identity in Christ. He has received treatment in the past, but remarked on how much progress he's made already through Harbor, saying ‘something is different here, maybe it's the atmosphere.’”

- Aaron Jones

"During a time of sudden and prolonged trauma that impacted nearly every aspect of their lives, one couple was able to continue marriage counseling and work on skills that helped them respond to the trauma that they were experiencing as individuals, as a couple, and as a family. The scholarship that they received has helped them to navigate the emotional and physical losses that they have endured as a family, and to minimize the level of disruption that the trauma could have imposed on their kids' lives.”

- Christina Feng

“One client faced the emotional fallout of sexual betrayal by a partner, which created significant trauma and required professional services to aid healing. Without scholarship support, they would not have been able to afford the care needed to work through their pain and begin rebuilding their life. Through the scholarship, the client gained the space and support to process their grief, navigate their evolving emotions, and empower themselves to set healthy boundaries, leading to greater emotional clarity and the ability to make more intentional decisions for their future.”

- Kimberly Rockness

“The Harbor scholarship program allowed me to establish a therapeutic relationship with a woman who felt suicidal and overwhelmed by grief. She had a lifetime of relational trauma and decades of vocational trauma. It has taken many months to establish health and stability for her. The scholarship support allowed her the time and space to work through the layers of narratives and beliefs that shaped her distorted perception of herself and the world around her. She and I are wrapping up her treatment now because she no longer falls prey to her old way of thinking, and instead is interacting with life from a perspective of health.”

- Day Marshall

From both a scientific and biblical perspective, we know that long periods of loneliness and isolation are not great for us. And yet, loneliness is also a common part of the human experience - increasingly so in a world that’s become so heavily dependent on technology for connection and communication. In light of this, how can we begin to understand and cope with feelings of loneliness? First, we must recognize that loneliness and being alone are not necessarily one and the same. Being alone...

When thinking about counseling, the image that often comes to mind is a one-on-one setting, counselor and client. Therapy is thought of as a private endeavor which affords space to dive into the inner world of thoughts and feelings. While this exclusive attention and focus on the individual self can be helpful, most of life happens with others. Whether family and friends, spouse or coworkers, our concept of who we are doesn’t exist in a therapeutic vacuum, but rather is negotiated in groups....

Through scholarships, sliding scale fees, and partnerships with churches, we work hard to ensure that no one is turned away due to financial need. As we near the end of 2024, we are filled with gratitude for the incredible growth and impact we’ve seen at Harbor Christian Counseling this year.
